There’s something about chocolate cake recipes that feels like coming home. Maybe it’s the way it fills the kitchen with that unmistakable aroma, or how it transforms even the most ordinary Tuesday into something worth celebrating. In my house, chocolate cake has been the answer to first days of school, forgotten anniversaries (yes, I’ve been there), and those moments when someone just needs a little extra love served on a plate.
My mom used to say, “Chocolate cake is like a hug that you can taste.” And after years of baking for my own family, I couldn’t agree more.

Description
This quick and foolproof chocolate sheet cake with warm fudgy frosting comes together in minutes and is perfect for beginners, busy families, or last-minute gatherings.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup (1 stick) butter
½ cup vegetable oil
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 cup water
½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1½ teaspoons vinegar)
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For frosting: ½ cup (1 stick) butter
For frosting: 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
For frosting: 6 tablespoons milk
For frosting: 3½ cups powdered sugar
For frosting: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
In a saucepan, combine butter, oil, cocoa powder, and water. Bring to a boil while stirring.
Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients and stir. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla, mixing until just combined.
Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
While the cake bakes, make the frosting. Bring butter, cocoa, and milk to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake for that signature fudgy top layer.
Notes
No need to wait for this cake to cool before frosting – the warm frosting on warm cake creates the perfect fudgy texture.
If you don’t have buttermilk, regular milk with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice works perfectly.
This cake stays moist for days if covered properly.
For a mocha variation, add 1 tablespoon of instant coffee to the boiling water.
